University Advancement Team: Dariel Dixon, Database Manager

Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to introduce a new member of the University Advancement team – Dariel Dixon, Database Manager, a 2001 graduate of Winston-Salem State University with a B.S. in computer science. Dariel comes to us from Fidelity Information Services where he was Client Server Developer Analyst. His responsibilities there were to handle day-to-day technology operations for several financial organizations.

Here at SSU, Dariel will ensure accuracy, integrity, and optimization of the donor database system; assess, analyze, and produce research summaries on prospective donors; and, act as liaison to the Computer Services & Information Technology department. Additionally, he will ensure technology performance for the Advancement Call Center.

Raised in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, Dariel currently resides in Jacksonville, FL with his wife, LaWanda, and their miniature schnauzer, Genesis. Dariel and LaWanda are members of Mount Horeb Missionary Baptist Church, where he serves on the usher board.

3 New Members of The University Advancement Team

It is my pleasure to introduce three new members of the University Advancement team – Jovita Covington, Marketing Coordinator; Linda Hansen, Administrative Services Coordinator; and, Barbara Myers, Director of Alumni Relations.

Jovita “Marti” Covington is a native of northern Virginia and a 2008 graduate of the University of Mississippi, where she earned a B.A. in Journalism with an emphasis on print publications. After graduation, she spent six months covering the 2008 presidential election with the Washington bureau of TIME Magazine before accepting a reporting position with The Beaufort Gazette and Island Packet newspapers in coastal South Carolina. She joins the Office of Marketing and Communications after more than a year covering Beaufort County business and government for both newspapers.

Linda Hansen is a South Carolina native and obtained bachelor’s in Liberal Arts and Master of Education degrees from Armstrong Atlantic State University. She possesses 17 years of experience within the University System of Georgia in departments of advancement, criminal justice, and institutional research; as well as the school of graduate studies at AASU. Linda is the proud mother of three grown children and one grand-daughter. Having traveled extensively during her husband’s 30-year military career, they now reside in Richmond Hill. Barbara Myers graduated from Paine College with a BA in English and Savannah State University with a Master’s of Public Administration degree. She is also a 2004 graduate of Leadership Savannah. Barbara has over 20 years of experience in higher education, most recently having served as the Director of Career Services and Coordinator of the Post Secondary Readiness Enrichment Program (PREP) at Armstrong Atlantic State University. She brings a wealth of experience in program development and community initiatives. Barbara has lived in the Savannah area for over 21 years and currently resides in Richmond Hill, GA with her husband, Kelvin; daughter, Kourtney; and son, Kameron. University Advancement Team: Louise Haaker – Grant Specialist

Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to introduce a new member of the University Advancement team: Louise Haaker – Grant Specialist. Ms. Haaker obtained her bachelor and master’s degrees in Public Administration from Florida International University, possesses 18 years of professional grant writing experience, and has held leadership roles in local governments in the State of Georgia.

I am confident that Ms. Haaker’s enthusiasm and expertise will lead to a significant increase in private grant funding for Savannah State University. Her immediate tasks are to implement a Grants Resource Center, and to develop a subject matter expert database in the Division of University Advancement; as well as to develop/recommend policies and procedures governing solicitation and administration of private grants at SSU. Toward that end, she will be reaching out to senior administration for information and input. Your support and assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Director of Development, Henry Lee Perry!

Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to introduce our new Director of Development, Henry Lee Perry! Lee is a Savannah native and SSU alumnus. He graduated here in 1996 with a Bachelors of Business Administration and has since held progressively responsible positions in the banking and finance industry, most recently at Carver National Bank. Lee is very active in the community and has been a member of several local boards, including the Oglethorpe Charter School and Savannah Chamber of Commerce. The immediate past president of the 100 Black Men of Savannah, Lee was instrumental in chartering the Collegiate 100 on SSU’s campus. The Collegiate 100 is the mentoring arm of the 100 Black Men organization. In his spare time, Lee likes to work out and play golf. He resides in Savannah with his wife, LaVertta, and their two children; son, Damien and daughter, Trinity.

Lee is excited about the opportunity to increase private support for SSU toward securing the future of his dear Alma Mater! His responsibilities include fundraising compliance and oversight of the [Title III funded] Grant Specialist.
